Back to Part 2 - Painting the Doors, Walls, and Windows
The loading dock is very nice as it comes in the kit.
But I wanted a distressed looking loading dock on my model so I attacked the dock pieces with razor saws, a metal brush and scissors.
Be careful, it is easy to over-do this step and wind up with chipped plywood.
Run the razor saw so that the teeth are perpendicular to the scribed lines to make wood grain.
Rub a steel brush over the wood. Again mostly perpendicular to the scribed lines.
Distress the ends of the boards with a fine tooth razor saw. Also run the fine toothed razor saw perpendicular to the scribed lines to add more grain.
Do not over-do this step.
Cut gaps between the ends of the boards with small scissors. It is very easy to mess this up so go slowly.
Once the decking is weathered to your satisfaction, stain it with India ink and Alcohol. I try to get varying amounts on the individual boards
Once the dock parts dry, dry-brush with white and grey paint.
To dry-brush, get some paint on your brush. Brush the paint off on some scrap paper or cardboard until almost none comes off of your brush. Then lightly run the dry brush over the parts.
